Chasing a proper fish supper across the country sounds indulgent until you taste the gap between a great chippy and a soggy one. Working from the VayCay Couple trips and the National Fish and Chip Awards shortlists, here are the best fish and chips in the UK worth the queue, each with its address, the order to place and what it costs. It covers the northern seaside legends, two London classics and the current national champion. Checked in August 2026, so prices and hours may have moved on.

Type best fish and chips UK into a search and you get a hundred near-identical listicles, so this one names the shop, the street and the exact dish to order.

What makes a chippy one of the best fish and chip shops?

Three things separate the greats. First, fresh fish, usually North Sea haddock in the north and cod further south, delivered daily rather than sitting frozen. Second, the frying medium, with the old-school shops using beef dripping for a richer crust and others groundnut or rapeseed oil. Third, chips cut thick and cooked twice so they are fluffy inside and crisp outside. Get those right, add a proper crunchy batter and mushy peas made from marrowfat peas, and you have the makings of one of the best fish and chip shops in the country.

The best fish and chips in the UK

The Magpie Cafe, at 14 Pier Road, Whitby, YO21 3PU, has fried since 1939 and is the North Yorkshire benchmark. Order the North Sea haddock and chips with a pot of mushy peas, and expect roughly 20 to 24 pounds sitting in the harbourside restaurant, less from the takeaway hatch next door. Queues are long in summer, so go early or book the restaurant.

Anstruther Fish Bar, at 42-44 Shore Street in Anstruther, Fife, KY10 3AQ, is a former UK champion looking over the Firth of Forth harbour. The haddock supper with salt and sauce, brown sauce in Scotland, runs about 13 to 16 pounds. Miller’s Fish and Chips, on The Village in Haxby just north of York, YO32 3HT, was crowned national champion in 2019 and still fries a faultless haddock for around 11 to 14 pounds.

The Cod’s Scallops, at 170 Bramcote Lane, Wollaton, Nottingham, NG8 2QP, is the Midlands pick, with a long counter of day-boat fish and a curry sauce worth the extra pound or two, mains about 11 to 15 pounds. Colman’s, at 186 Ocean Road, South Shields, NE33 2JQ, has been in the same family since 1905 and is the place to try battered hake rather than cod, roughly 10 to 14 pounds. And the reigning national Takeaway of the Year, Yarm Road Fish and Chips in Darlington, won the 2025 title for its haddock and hand-cut chips, a straight takeaway supper for about 9 to 12 pounds.

The best fish and chips in London

London has two that locals defend fiercely. The Golden Hind, at 73 Marylebone Lane, W1U 2PN, has fried since 1914, cooks in groundnut oil and does a superb cod or haddock with proper chips for around 16 to 20 pounds, open Monday to Saturday and closed Sundays. Poppies, at 6-8 Hanbury Street in Spitalfields, E1 6QR, with further branches in Soho and Camden, has run since 1952 and gets its fish daily from Billingsgate Market. Get the cod and chips with a side of jellied eels for the full East End experience, about 18 to 22 pounds. These are the best fish and chips London keeps coming back to.

The best seaside fish and chips

Eaten out of the paper with a sea view, the classics are hard to beat. Whitby and Anstruther above are the headline seaside names, and for a Highlands road trip the Real Food Cafe, on Main Street in Tyndrum, FK20 8RY, on the A82, fries sustainable haddock to order and is the best seaside fish and chips stop between Glasgow and Fort William, mains about 14 to 18 pounds. Bring cash for the smaller places and a coat for the gulls.

The National Fish and Chip Awards, explained

If you want a shortlist that updates every year, follow the National Fish and Chip Awards, run by the National Federation of Fish Friers and now in its 37th year. Judges score on fish quality, sustainability, staff and service across around fifteen categories, and the headline Takeaway of the Year is the one to watch. Yarm Road in Darlington took the 2025 crown. You can see the full winners on the awards site, and check that a shop’s fish carries the blue MSC sustainability label if that matters to you.

What to order like a local

A few pointers save you looking like a tourist. In the north and Scotland, haddock is the default and cod the southern choice, so pick the local favourite. Ask for mushy peas, not garden peas, and in Scotland a fish supper already means it comes with chips. Curry sauce or gravy on the chips is normal in the Midlands and north, scraps or bits are the free crispy batter offcuts in Yorkshire, and a fishcake here is a patty of fish and potato, not a Thai one. A battered sausage or a saveloy is the classic cheap add-on.

Tips before you queue

Seaside shops often cut their hours out of season and some close one or two days a week, so check before a long drive. Sitting in usually costs a few pounds more than takeaway for the same fish, the trade-off being a plate, peas and a cup of tea. Weekend lunchtimes and Friday evenings bring the longest queues, and smaller places can be cash only, so carry some. If you only manage one, make it the Magpie in Whitby or the Golden Hind in London.

Pick a shop, order the local fish, and eat it out of the paper while it is hot. Make a trip of it with a weekend away, compare notes with how the Dutch do their chips, or plan to eat your way round the continent.

FAQs

Where is the best fish and chips in the UK?

There is no single winner, but the Magpie Cafe in Whitby and Anstruther Fish Bar in Fife are the seaside benchmarks, while Yarm Road in Darlington holds the 2025 National Fish and Chip Awards Takeaway of the Year title. In London, the Golden Hind in Marylebone leads.

Cod or haddock, which should I order?

Both are classic. Haddock has a slightly sweeter, softer flake and is the standard in the north of England and Scotland, while cod is meatier and the usual choice in the south. In a northern chippy, order haddock, and in London either is fine.

How much does fish and chips cost in the UK?

A takeaway fish supper is roughly 9 to 14 pounds in 2026, and a sit-down portion in a restaurant like the Magpie is 18 to 24. Sides such as mushy peas, curry sauce or a battered sausage add a pound or two each.

What is the best fish and chips in London?

The Golden Hind on Marylebone Lane, going since 1914, and Poppies in Spitalfields, going since 1952, are the two most loved. Golden Hind is the quieter, old-fashioned sit-down, Poppies the livelier, retro-styled option with jellied eels on the side.

What are mushy peas made of?

Dried marrowfat peas, soaked and simmered until soft and thick with a little salt and sometimes mint. They are a fixture of a proper fish supper and quite different from ordinary garden peas.
