Dubai does rooftops better than almost anywhere, a skyline of towers, warm evenings most of the year, and dozens of bars built to make the most of both. For a couple, the pull is simple, a drink in hand as the sun drops behind the Burj Khalifa or the Palm. This is a curated list of the best rooftop bars in Dubai for two, with the practical detail that most guides leave out, the views, the vibe, the rough spend and the dress code, plus a plain answer on sunset times and drinking as a tourist.

The best rooftop bars in Dubai for couples

There are dozens of rooftops in the city, so this is a shortlist that actually suits a couple, weighted towards the view and the atmosphere rather than the party. Prices are a rough guide to what two people spend on drinks and a few plates.

For a first visit as a couple, Ce La Vi gives you the classic Burj Khalifa moment, Sushisamba is the special-occasion dinner, and Attiko is the current favourite for a sunset that turns into the evening. Treehouse is the one to choose if you want quiet over buzz.

A few worth the detail

Ce La Vi

The postcard choice. It sits on top of the Address Sky View in Downtown, so the Burj Khalifa fills the view, and there is an infinity pool, a sushi-led menu and a dancefloor later on. There is a minimum spend of around AED 500 a person, roughly 105 pounds, so it is a treat rather than a casual drink. Book a table near sunset and dress smart, no shorts or flip-flops in the evening.

Ce La Vi – Address Sky View

Sushisamba

On the 51st floor of the St Regis on the Palm, Sushisamba has the best all-round view on this list, a full 360 of the Palm and the Gulf. It is a Japanese-Brazilian-Peruvian dinner spot first and a bar second, and the bill for two on a weekend night climbs quickly, so treat it as the celebration meal. Smart-elegant dress, and book well ahead for a sunset table.

Iris

Iris has moved from its old Business Bay rooftop to a larger site at Meydan, so older guides point you to the wrong place. The Burj Khalifa view is now from further away but still striking, the mood is more lounge than fine-dining, and the happy hour, roughly 5pm to 8pm with drinks from AED 35, makes it the most affordable name here.

What time is sunset in Dubai?

Sunset is the whole point, so time your booking around it. Dubai’s sunset shifts through the year, and the golden half hour before it is when the terraces fill. Arrive 45 to 60 minutes ahead to get a good table.

Time of yearRough sunset time
December and JanuaryAround 5:30pm
March and AprilAround 6:15pm to 6:30pm
June and JulyAround 7:00pm to 7:15pm
September and OctoberAround 6:00pm to 6:30pm

Summer sunsets are the latest but the daytime heat is fierce, so the shoulder months of March to April and October give the best mix of a warm evening and a comfortable terrace.

Dress code and minimum spend

Most Dubai rooftops run a smart-casual dress code that tightens in the evening. For men that means no shorts, sportswear, beach clothes or flip-flops after dark, and for everyone it leans towards dressing up rather than down. Tailored shorts sometimes pass at lunch, not at dinner.

Minimum spends are common at the higher-end venues. Expect roughly AED 100 to 300 a person at most rooftops, rising to around AED 500 a person at the marquee names like Ce La Vi. That spend usually goes on drinks and food, so it is not an entry fee as such, but budget for it. Booking a table is worth it at any of the popular spots, especially around sunset and at weekends, which in the UAE means Friday and Saturday.

Can tourists drink alcohol in Dubai?

Yes, and the rules are more relaxed than many first-timers expect. Tourists can drink freely in licensed venues, the hotel bars, restaurants, rooftops and beach clubs where every place on this list sits, with no personal licence or paperwork needed. The drinking age is 21. What is not allowed is drinking in public, so no alcohol on the street, in parks or on public beaches, and never drink and drive, where the limit is zero. For the current position before you travel, check the UK travel advice for the UAE.

What to skip

A couple of things save money and disappointment. Skip the rooftops that are really nightclubs if you want a romantic evening, the music and the crowd take over after about 10pm at the party venues, so go early or pick a calmer spot like Treehouse or Zeta. Do not turn up in shorts and flip-flops expecting to get in after dark, you will be turned away at the smarter places. And do not rely on old guides for Iris, it is at Meydan now, not Business Bay. Booking directly with the venue rather than through a reseller usually gets you a better table for the same spend.

Dubai makes an easy add-on to a wider trip, and a rooftop evening is the simplest way to see the city at its best as a couple. For more of the region, see the Middle East hub, or the interactive map of our destinations. For venue opening hours and what is on, Dubai’s tourism board keeps a current listing.
