Eight kilometres of shallow Black Sea sand, cheap all-inclusive hotels and a party strip that runs until dawn, that is Sunny Beach, Bulgaria’s biggest summer resort. It sits on Burgas Bay right next to the old town of Nessebar, it is one of the cheapest beach weeks in Europe, and since 2026 it prices in euros. Below is where it is and how to get there, the beach, the nightlife, where to stay and what it costs, plus how it compares with Nessebar. For the wider country, see the Bulgaria guide. Written and checked in July 2026.

Where is Sunny Beach and how do you get there?

Sunny Beach, or Slanchev Bryag, is on Bulgaria’s central Black Sea coast, on Burgas Bay and joined to the historic town of Nessebar. The nearest airport is Burgas, about 25 kilometres and 30 to 40 minutes away by taxi or transfer. Varna airport is the fallback, but it is around 100 kilometres north and closer to a two-hour drive, so ignore any old guide that tells you to fly into Varna for Sunny Beach. Once you are there the resort is walkable, and cheap local buses and water taxis run to Nessebar and Burgas.

What is the beach like?

The beach is the whole point. It runs about eight kilometres in a gentle arc of soft, pale sand, it shelves slowly into calm, shallow water, and it flies a Blue Flag for cleanliness, which is why it suits families as much as party groups. Sunbeds and umbrellas line most of it, with water sports, and the quieter, less built-up stretch is at the southern end towards Nessebar. The busiest, loudest section is in the centre in front of the big hotels.

What is Sunny Beach’s nightlife like?

This is one of the cheapest party resorts in Europe, and the nightlife is a big reason people come. The heart of it is Flower Street, the pedestrian bar-and-club strip locals call the Kvartala, packed with bars, cheap drinks and touts in July and August. Cacao Beach, at the southern end, is the daytime-into-night beach-club scene with DJs and events, and the offshore boat parties are a Sunny Beach staple, sailing in the late afternoon with music, drinks and the sunset. It is loud and unpretentious, closer to a Bulgarian Magaluf than a refined night out.

Where should you stay in Sunny Beach?

Most hotels here are large and all-inclusive, and the price is what pulls people in. Stay in the centre if you want the bars and the beach clubs on your doorstep, and pick the quieter southern end, towards Nessebar, if you are travelling as a family or a couple and want to sleep. For an old-town base with more character, book in Nessebar itself and dip into Sunny Beach for the day. If you want the Black Sea without the party, the calmer resort of Balchik further north is a gentler alternative.

What else is there to do?

Beyond the beach and the bars, the big draws are the two waterparks, Action Aquapark and Aqua Paradise, which are among the largest in the country and easy family days out. The unmissable trip is next door to Nessebar, a UNESCO old town on a little peninsula, crammed with ancient churches and wooden houses, ten minutes away by bus or water taxi. From Burgas you can also take a boat to St Anastasia Island, a monastery islet in the bay. The whole Black Sea coast south towards Sozopol makes an easy day trip by car.

Is Sunny Beach cheap?

Very, by western European standards, which is the other half of the appeal. A beer in a bar runs 1.50 to 3 euros, a casual meal for two 20 to 35, and a sunbed and umbrella a few euros a day. Local food is the value pick, so look for banitsa and shopska salad and grilled fish rather than the tourist-menu burgers. Here are the everyday 2026 numbers.

ItemRough 2026 price
Beer in a bar1.50 to 3 euros
Casual meal for two20 to 35 euros
Sunbed and umbrella5 to 10 euros a day
Taxi from Burgas airport20 to 30 euros
Waterpark day ticket20 to 30 euros
Boat party ticket25 to 40 euros

When is the best time to visit, and is it safe?

The season runs roughly May to September, with the sea warm enough to swim from late June to early September. July and August are the hottest, busiest and rowdiest, while June and September are calmer and cheaper with the water still warm. It is a safe resort for the usual holiday sense, mind your drinks and valuables on the party strip and use metered or app taxis. For official information there is Bulgaria’s tourism board.

What should you skip?

A few honest calls. Skip the unmetered taxis that wait outside the clubs, agree a price or use an app instead. Skip eating on the main strip, where the food is priced for tourists, and walk a street back or into Nessebar for better and cheaper. Do not book a week only in the loud central hotels if you actually want to rest, the southern end is calmer. And do not fly into Varna by mistake, Burgas is the airport you want.

Sunny Beach is not subtle, but for a long, cheap week of sand, sea and a big night out it is hard to beat in Europe, with Nessebar next door for the days you want something older and quieter. At VayCay Couple it is the Black Sea resort we send first-timers to on a budget.

FAQs

Yes, it is one of the cheapest party resorts in Europe. Flower Street, the Kvartala, is the main bar-and-club strip, Cacao Beach runs the beach-club scene, and the offshore boat parties are a local staple.

Is Sunny Beach cheap?

Very, by western standards. A beer is 1.50 to 3 euros and a casual meal for two 20 to 35 euros. Eating local food and drinking a street back from the main strip keeps it cheapest.
