We keep telling friends that Amsterdam makes a better couples’ city than most people expect, once you step away from the stag-do streets near the station. The canals, the small brown cafes and the low winter light do most of the work. Search couples things to do Amsterdam and the canal cruise tops every list, but there is far more. This is our plain list of the most romantic things to do in Amsterdam for couples, with where to go and what it costs, from VayCay Couple, who have wandered it in every season. Everything here is in euros, checked in September 2026.

Take a canal cruise, ideally after dark

The obvious one is still the best. Gliding the Netherlands capital’s canals is prettiest in the evening, when the seven bridges of the Reguliersgracht light up and the gabled houses glow. Skip the big glass tour boats and take a small open one, the Those Dam Boat Guys and the saloon-boat operators run relaxed evening trips for around 18 to 30 euros a head, some letting you bring your own drinks. For a free version, walk the same canals at dusk and cross the lit-up Magere Brug, the skinny wooden bridge over the Amstel.

Get lost in the Jordaan and the Begijnhof

The Jordaan is the neighbourhood we would send any couple to, a grid of narrow canals like the Bloemgracht and Egelantiersgracht lined with brown cafes and flower boxes. Have a jenever on the tiny canal-side terrace of Cafe ‘t Smalle, then find the Begijnhof, a hidden courtyard of old almshouses off the Spui that stays quiet even in summer, with the city’s oldest wooden house tucked in a corner. Both cost nothing and are as romantic as Amsterdam gets. Just south, the Nine Streets, or Negen Straatjes, are full of tiny boutiques and coffee spots for an afternoon of pottering.

Go up high, and out to a windmill

For a view, the A’DAM Lookout across the water has a rooftop terrace and Europe’s highest swing, which tips you out over the IJ river at sunset. Back on the ground, walk east to the De Gooyer windmill, the tallest in the city, and have a beer in the sun outside the small Brouwerij ‘t IJ brewery beneath it. It is an easy, unfussy afternoon and a good antidote to the crowds in the centre.

A slow afternoon in the Vondelpark

Amsterdam’s big central park is free and made for couples, a loop of ponds, lawns and cafes just off the Museumplein. Bring a picnic and a bottle from a supermarket, find a spot by the water, and watch the city cycle past. The Blauwe Theehuis, a round 1930s pavilion in the middle, does drinks and cake if you would rather be served. On a wet afternoon instead, the Rijksmuseum, then the Van Gogh Museum next door, make an easy, unhurried date, though both need booking ahead.

Where to eat and drink as a couple

The romantic restaurants Amsterdam is known for tend to be small and canal-side rather than grand. In a former greenhouse out past the city ring, De Kas serves a set menu built around what it grows that day, one of the nicest special-occasion dinners in town. In the Jordaan, book a canal table at a small bistro and keep it simple. Finish with a slice of Dutch apple pie and cream at Papeneiland, a 1600s cafe on the corner of the Prinsengracht, which is a date in itself for a few euros.

The winter light festival

From late November to mid-January, the Amsterdam Light Festival strings glowing artworks along the canals, and a small evening boat through them makes one of the most romantic winter outings in the city. Wrap up, buy a hot drink and let the boat do the work. It is the cold-season answer to the tulips, and it pairs well with a brown cafe when you thaw out afterwards.

Where to stay for a romantic weekend

For a couples’ trip we stay in the canal belt or the Jordaan, where the tall old houses and quiet water beat a business hotel by the station. The splurge choices are the Pulitzer and The Dylan, both spread through restored canal houses, while a room on a moored houseboat is the cheaper and more memorable option. Wherever you book, a canal view is worth paying a little more for.

A day trip for the tulips

If you come in spring, the Keukenhof gardens near Lisse are the romantic day trip, seven million tulips in bloom for a few weeks in spring, about 40 minutes out by bus with a combined ticket for around 20 euros entry. Outside those weeks it is closed, so check before you plan around it. The rest of the year, a slow morning in the Vondelpark or the free garden behind the Rijksmuseum does the job closer to home.

Keep to the canals, go slow and eat where the locals do. Couples on a budget will find plenty of free things to do here, and these all double as easy Amsterdam date ideas if you live nearby. The official I amsterdam tourist site lists current events and opening hours. Fijne reis.

FAQs

Is Amsterdam good for couples?

Very. It is compact, walkable and made for aimless wandering along the water, with small cafes and quiet courtyards between the big sights. Stick to the Jordaan and the canal belt over the busy red-light streets and it ranks among the most romantic cities in Europe.

Is Amsterdam expensive for a couples’ weekend?

It can be, but it need not. Canal walks, the Begijnhof and window-shopping the Jordaan are free, and a small-boat cruise or a pie and coffee costs little. The money goes on hotels, dear on weekends, so book early and think about a weekday break.

What is the most romantic thing to do in Amsterdam?

An evening canal cruise in a small boat is the classic, the whole city lit up from the water. If you would rather not spend, walking the Jordaan canals at dusk and crossing the Magere Brug is nearly as good and free.

Where is the best romantic dinner in Amsterdam?

De Kas, in a greenhouse on the edge of town, is our pick for a special night, with a daily menu from its own garden. For something cheaper, book a canal-side table at a small Jordaan bistro rather than anywhere near Dam Square.

When is Amsterdam most romantic?

Spring for the tulips and blossom, and December for the lights and the cold-weather cosiness of the brown cafes. Both beat high summer, when the centre is at its most crowded. A weekday is always calmer than a weekend.
