The Netherlands is much more than Amsterdam. The country is small and flat, the trains are fast and frequent, and you can be in a different city in half an hour, so a good trip pairs the capital with two or three other places. Rotterdam brings bold modern architecture, Utrecht has the prettiest canals, and in spring the tulip fields at Keukenhof are the reason many people come at all. This guide covers where to go beyond Amsterdam, what it costs, when to visit and how the trains work. It is an easy short break in Europe. The national tourist board has more. Written and checked in July 2026.

What are the best places to visit in the Netherlands?

Base yourself in Amsterdam or a quieter city and use the trains to reach the rest. Here is how the main places compare and how far each is from Amsterdam.

Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht

Most trips start in Amsterdam for the canals, the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, with the full picture in our Amsterdam guide. Forty minutes south, Rotterdam is the opposite, a modern city rebuilt after the war, with the cube houses, the Markthal food hall and a strong design scene. Utrecht, 25 minutes away, is the local favourite, with canals set below street level and wharf cellars turned into cafes, and far fewer tourists than the capital.

The Hague, Haarlem and Leiden

The Hague sits on the coast, pairing the Mauritshuis gallery, home to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, with the Scheveningen beach and pier. Between it and Amsterdam are two small cities worth a half-day each, Haarlem for its grand market square and the Frans Hals Museum, and Leiden for canal-side streets and the house-lined Rapenburg. Both are 15 to 35 minutes by train and make calmer bases than Amsterdam.

Beyond the cities, tulips and windmills

The countryside is the other half of the trip. Keukenhof, the vast bulb garden near Lisse, opens only from late March to mid-May and is the place to see the tulips, at about 20 euro with a timed ticket. Kinderdijk has nineteen 18th-century windmills in a row, a UNESCO site reached by waterbus from Rotterdam, and Zaanse Schans, 20 minutes from Amsterdam, has working windmills you can walk among for free. For more of the dunes, forests and islands, see our roundup of the country’s wild landscapes.

What are the best things to do in the Netherlands?

The set-piece experiences are easy to line up.

Cycle. Bikes rule here, and a day’s hire is about 12 to 15 euro, with flat, protected lanes everywhere.

Do the big museums. The Rijksmuseum is about 22.50 euro, the Van Gogh Museum about 20, and the Anne Frank House about 16 but it sells out weeks ahead, so book the moment your dates are set.

See the tulips. Keukenhof in spring, or just take the train past the bulb fields around Lisse in April.

Walk among windmills at Kinderdijk or Zaanse Schans, and try a fresh stroopwafel, a warm caramel waffle, for a couple of euro at any market.

How do you get around the Netherlands?

The train is the easy answer. The national railway runs frequent intercity services, and you tap in and out with a contactless bank card or phone through the OVpay system, so there is no need to buy paper tickets. Sample fares are cheap, roughly 9 euro Amsterdam to Utrecht and 17 to Rotterdam. In the cities, hire a bike or walk. A car is a liability in Amsterdam, where parking is among the most expensive in Europe, so only rent one for the deep countryside.

When is the best time to visit the Netherlands?

Spring is the headline season. Late March to mid-May brings the tulips and Keukenhof, and 27 April is King’s Day, a huge nationwide street party. May to September is mild and long for cycling and canal-side terraces. Winter is cold, grey and quiet, with the odd cold snap freezing the canals, and it is the cheapest time to visit the cities. April weekends around the tulips are the busiest, so book beds early.

Is the Netherlands expensive?

It sits in the middle for western Europe, pricier than southern Europe but cheaper than Switzerland or the Nordics. Amsterdam is the costly part, mostly for hotels. Rough 2026 prices to plan around.

ItemRough cost
Coffee3 to 3.50 euro
Beer, small glass4 to 6 euro
Lunch, a filled broodje6 to 10 euro
Dinner main18 to 25 euro
Rijksmuseum entryAbout 22.50 euro
Bike hire, one day12 to 15 euro
Train, Amsterdam to RotterdamAbout 17 euro

How many days do you need in the Netherlands?

Four to five days covers Amsterdam plus a couple of day trips at a comfortable pace. A week lets you add Rotterdam or The Hague as a second base and reach Giethoorn or Kinderdijk without rushing. Because the trains are so quick, you can see a lot from a single base, so many people stay put in Amsterdam or Utrecht and travel out each day.

Holland vs the Netherlands, what is the difference?

A common mix-up. The country is the Netherlands. Holland is really just two of its twelve provinces, North and South Holland, the region that holds Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. People use Holland loosely for the whole country, and even the tourist board did for years, but the correct name is the Netherlands, and the Dutch outside those two provinces will gently point that out.

What should you skip in the Netherlands?

A few honest calls. Skip the coffeeshop and Red Light circuit in Amsterdam if it is not your scene, since the rest of the city and country has far more to it. Skip buying tulip bulbs from the floating flower market as souvenirs, because many are not cleared for UK or other customs and get binned at the border. Skip hiring a car for a cities trip, given the parking cost and the excellent trains. And take care on a bike at first, as Amsterdam’s cyclists are fast and will not slow for a wobbling tourist.

Planning the trip

Pick one base, buy nothing more than a contactless card for the trains, and treat each day as a short hop to a new city or a windmill village. Come in spring for the tulips or in summer for the long light on the canals, and book the Anne Frank House and any Keukenhof tickets well ahead. You can see how these places link up on our destinations map.

FAQs

What are the best places to visit in the Netherlands?

Amsterdam for the canals and museums, Rotterdam for modern architecture, Utrecht for pretty canals and a student buzz, and The Hague for art and the beach. In spring, add the Keukenhof tulip gardens, and any time of year the windmills at Kinderdijk or Zaanse Schans and the canal village of Giethoorn.

How many days do you need in the Netherlands?

Four to five days covers Amsterdam and a couple of day trips. A week lets you add a second base like Rotterdam or The Hague and reach Giethoorn or Kinderdijk. The fast trains mean you can see a lot from one base.

When is the best time to visit the Netherlands?

Late March to mid-May for the tulips and Keukenhof, with 27 April bringing King’s Day. May to September is mild and good for cycling. Winter is cold and quiet but the cheapest time for the cities. Book early for the busy tulip weekends.

Is the Netherlands expensive?

It is mid-priced for western Europe. Expect about 3 euro for a coffee, 18 to 25 for a dinner main, and 22.50 for the Rijksmuseum. Amsterdam hotels are the big cost, so a night or two in Utrecht or Rotterdam can save money.

What is the difference between Holland and the Netherlands?

The country is the Netherlands. Holland is just two of its provinces, North and South Holland, which contain Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. The name Holland is often used for the whole country, but the Netherlands is correct.
