Sunset at Sheikh Zayed Mosque: A Guide to Abu Dhabi’s Top Spots

Our journey in Abu Dhabi, Middle East started with one simple plan: to chase the sunset. As VayCay Couple, our travels are all about those magical moments that take our breath away, and there’s no better place to find that than at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. With its towering domes and glistening white marble, it’s a destination that captured our hearts before we even stepped inside. But this was only the beginning of our Abu Dhabi adventure—a city of contrasts where tradition meets modern luxury.

Our Sunset Experience at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Arriving at the mosque just before the sun dipped below the horizon, we were both spellbound. The sight of its marble pillars glowing under the fading light, paired with the mosque’s reflection on the water, felt almost surreal. This wasn’t just sightseeing; it was an emotional experience. Hand in hand, we explored the intricately designed hallways and stunning chandeliers, capturing as many photos as we could to preserve the memory. But truly, no camera can do justice to the beauty that unfolds here at sunset.

Tip for Couples: Arrive early to catch the changing light and experience the mosque both in daylight and as it lights up at night. It’s breathtakingly romantic.

A Stroll on the Corniche

After our time at the mosque, we found ourselves at the Corniche, a picturesque stretch along the Arabian Gulf. The Corniche gave us a glimpse into Abu Dhabi’s more relaxed side. We rented a tandem bike and rode along the waterfront, laughing, wobbling, and enjoying the cool evening breeze. Sitting on a bench overlooking the gulf, we shared Arabic coffee and dates, savouring the moment and reflecting on the beauty of the Middle East.

Dining at Emirates Palace

For dinner, we wanted a truly special experience, so we splurged on a meal at Emirates Palace. It’s every bit as grand as it sounds, with golden touches everywhere and a setting straight out of a movie. The food was incredible, but it was the atmosphere that made it unforgettable. As we dined, we exchanged stories and laughs, completely in awe of the palace’s opulence. And yes, we ordered the famous gold-dusted cappuccino—because when in Abu Dhabi, why not?

Discovering Local Culture at the Souk

The next day, we explored the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri, a market designed to look like an old Arabian village with its intricate architecture and winding canals. This was one of our favourite parts of the trip because it felt like stepping into another world. We picked up some spices and handmade jewellery as keepsakes, and we even tried our hand at bargaining (one of us is better at it than the other!). The souk’s vibrant energy was infectious, and it reminded us of why we love discovering new cultures and traditions together.

Sailing into the Sunset

No romantic adventure is complete without a sunset cruise, so we ended our day on a private boat. With the sound of the waves and the sight of the illuminated skyline, it felt like something out of a dream. Together, we watched the city lights come to life as the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon. It was peaceful, awe-inspiring, and unforgettable—just the way we like our adventures.

Our Takeaway from Abu Dhabi

Our time in Abu Dhabi especially at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, taught us that romance isn’t just about candle-lit dinners; it’s about exploring together, embracing new experiences, and creating memories that become part of our story. Abu Dhabi gave us moments we’ll remember forever: a peaceful sunset at one of the world’s most beautiful mosques, laughter on the Corniche, the grandeur of Emirates Palace, and the vibrant culture of the souk. Each experience reminded us why we started VayCay Couple in the first place—to find beauty, adventure, and connection in every corner of the world.

Whether you’re planning a trip as a couple or simply looking for travel inspiration, we can’t recommend Abu Dhabi enough. It’s a city that offers the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and romance. And for us, it will always hold a special place in our journey.
